Fairness in Information Access Systems

چکیده

Recommendation, information retrieval, and other access systems pose unique challenges for investigating applying the fairness non-discrimination concepts that have been developed studying machine learning systems. While fair shares many commonalities with classification, multistakeholder nature of applications, rank-based problem setting, centrality personalization in cases, role user response complicate identifying precisely what types operationalizations may be relevant, let alone measuring or promoting them. In this monograph, we present a taxonomy various dimensions survey literature to date on new rapidly-growing topic. We preface brief introductions algorithmic fairness, facilitate use work by scholars experience one (or neither) these fields who wish learn about their intersection. conclude several open problems access, along some suggestions how approach research space.

Access to data in health information systems.

This issue of the Bulletin contains a series of articles on the creation of health information systems in developing countries. A broad range of themes is raised — from what information a properly formed health information system ought to collect, to rationalizing the collection of information across agencies or institutions, and a consideration of the costs, benefits and potential uses of info...

Røstad Access Control in Healthcare Information Systems

Access control is a key feature of healthcare information systems. Access control is about enforcing rules to ensure that only authorized users get access to resources in a system. In healthcare systems this means protecting patient privacy. However, the top priority is always to provide the best possible care for a patient. This depends on the clinicians having access to the information they n...

Spatial fairness in linear random-access networks

Random-access networks may exhibit severe unfairness in throughput, in the sense that some nodes receive consistently higher throughput than others. Recent studies show that this unfairness is due to local differences in the neighborhood structure: nodes with fewer neighbors receive better access. We study the unfairness in saturated linear networks, and adapt the randomaccess CSMA protocol to ...

Controlling TCP Fairness in WLAN access networks

In this paper, we study the problem of maintaining fairness for TCP connections in wireless local area networks (WLANs) based upon the IEEE 802.11 standard. Current implementations of 802.11 use the so-called Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) which provides similar medium access priority to all stations. Although this mode of operation ensures fair access to the medium at the MAC level, i...
